It’s 3 a.m. in India. A learner’s lesson never started, the tutor has dropped offline, and two other chats are blinking. You type fast, stay calm, and fix the first one. (An illustrative scene, not a real agent’s story.)
Preply remote jobs in India are real. The company is hiring full-time Customer Care Specialists who work from home, in writing only. But this isn’t a gentle entry point. It suits people with proven live chat experience who can handle rotating night shifts. Here’s what the posting says, what I’d do, and what I’d avoid.
Is the Preply Customer Care Specialist job really remote and chat-only?
Yes. The listing is full time, remote, and says “no calls,” only chats, emails, and social messages. You’ll answer user questions, flag problem areas to the right team, and pass customer feedback to product teams.
One catch: the same posting asks for “outstanding verbal skills.” I’d read that as general communication ability, but check it with the recruiter.
Also, “no calls” doesn’t mean low stress. Handling several chats at once against clear KPIs is its own pressure, and the application form asks about your chat concurrency for that reason.
Is $667 a month good pay for this job?
The posting states $8,004 gross a year, or $667 a month. It doesn’t say how many shifts you’ll work.
Here’s an illustration, not a figure from Preply. If you worked 22 nine-hour shifts a month, that’s 198 hours, or roughly $3.40 an hour before deductions. Your real number depends on your schedule and whether shifts include paid breaks.
My stance: it’s reasonable if this is your first remote role with an international company and you want a recognizable name on your résumé. It’s poor value if you already earn about this much locally without night work. Don’t take it just because it’s dollars.
What do rotating night shifts and a 3-month no-leave rule do to your life?
Preply supports customers 24/7. You work 9-hour shifts with at least 11 hours between them, and your schedule rotates monthly between morning, afternoon, and night.
So you could be on mornings in March and nights in April. Sleep, family time, and any side income get rearranged every 30 days. The form also asks about evening, weekend, and night availability, so assume you’ll get all of them.
The first three months are onboarding. Continuous attendance is required and time off isn’t permitted except emergencies. Don’t apply if a wedding, exam, or trip is already booked.
Remote work is often sold as flexible. Here, the flexibility is Preply’s: you adapt to the rota.
How does Preply’s hiring process work, and where do applicants get filtered?
There are three stages:
- A recorded video introduction plus a short writing assessment.
- A conversation with Talent Acquisition, where salary is discussed.
- A technical interview with a CS Team Lead.
The earliest filter is the application form. It asks how long live chat was your main channel (at least 90% of your workload), your average concurrency, and when you last worked in live chat. It tells you to exclude email, tickets, and phone support.
I’d follow that literally. Padding your chat experience with email work is the fastest way to fail a later interview.
The form also asks you to write a message to a customer who waited two hours. Compare:
- Weak: “Sorry for the inconvenience. How can I help?”
- Stronger: “I’m sorry you waited two hours. That’s too long. I’ve read your earlier messages, so you won’t need to repeat anything. Here’s what I’m checking first…”
The second apologizes specifically, shows you’ve read the history, and moves to action.
What equipment do you need before you apply?
The posting lists a computer with an i5 or i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD, plus internet of at least 30 Mbps. The form says your RAM will be double-checked, so answer honestly.
There’s a trade-off. If you need a new laptop to qualify, the cost could eat a large share of a year’s pay at this salary. I’d confirm the offer is realistic before buying anything.
Who is this job NOT for?
Skip it if:
- You have no real live chat experience.
- You need planned leave in the first three months.
- You can’t work nights or weekends.
- You won’t be based in India for the whole job. The form asks, and the role is for India.
- You expect more than the posted package.
- You need a predictable schedule for caregiving or study.
